If you have just bought a new or used pick-up truck, you are probably excited to see what adventures you can go on with it over the summer. Pick-up trucks don’t just have to be work tools. Their spacious cab, decent gross weight capacity and robust, off-road driving capabilities make them ideal for exploring truck-only spots in the UK and enjoying some high-octane road trip fun.
Despite the term ‘off-road,’ you are not allowed to simply drive anywhere you like in the UK. Always do your research in advance and make sure that your pick-up truck is actually allowed where you are planning to drive, and that you will not be spoiling any natural habitats or disturbing local communities. Where possible, stick to designated dirt tracks and trails. There should also be plenty of maps and guidance available online to download and take with you.
Always have a means of calling for help in an emergency, such as a fully charged mobile phone. Pack extra food, water, warm blankets, tow ropes, spare tyres, tools and a first-aid kit. Make sure you know how to drive your pick-up truck off-road and have at least a basic understanding of maintenance and repairs. Work out how much fuel you are going to need – and where you can stop to fill up on the road.
From rugged mountain tracks to scenic coastal runs, there are so many different truck-only road trip destinations where you can some off-road adventures in the UK this summer. Here are four ideas for truck-friendly summer destinations.
Explore the UK’s wilderness by truck
So much of the UK’s countryside is entirely wild and unspoiled. Teeming with wildlife and surrounded by stunning vistas, there are plenty of wilderness-focused truck-worthy summer escapes to plan. Driving off-road, not seeing another person for miles and parking up to enjoy an outdoor meal must count as one of the best UK road trips for trucks there are. Bring your mates for a chilled break and an unforgettable bonding experience. Don’t forget to pack a first aid kit, decent walking gear, more food and water than you think you’ll need and a basic truck maintenance kit to keep you on the road.
Go truck camping in the UK
Spending a night (or several) under the stars is one of life’s greatest joys. Combine the warmer summer weather, longer nights and a pick-up truck to sleep in, and you can have the UK camping adventure of a lifetime. Camping trips count as some of the best off-the-grid truck adventures, especially if you leave behind the trappings of modern life. While you should probably bring along a phone for emergencies, try to keep it switched off until needed. Find out where you are allowed to park up, camp and get a campfire going to cook your own supper under a summer sky. Then, spend the days walking, driving and enjoying the best of the British countryside.
Up hills and down dales
Some of the most exciting trucking routes in the UK take in picturesque mountain tracks, dramatic hill climbs and deep valleys. The variety of these types of roads keeps things interesting, and the views can be spectacular. Getting deep into the UK countryside helps you escape from the daily grind and the crowds. You could even take in some hiking, mountain climbing or free swimming while you’re there. There’s plenty of room in a pick-up truck to pack all the gear you need. You are very likely to find several designated dirt tracks to take you deep into the mountains.
Coastal fun
Driving your pick-up truck to the coast has many benefits. As well as navigating clifftop roads with sweeping views out to sea, you can also enjoy playing on beaches and exploring beautiful seaside towns. Watch out for tide times to avoid getting stranded, especially if you plan to park on the beach (where this is allowed). Again, there is plenty of room inside a pick-up truck to pack your surfing, paddleboarding and sea swimming gear, as well as space for towels, sun shades, windbreaks and even the odd bucket and spade! Don’t forget sunscreen. You may also find the coastal breeze most welcome if we are in for as hot a summer as last year.
